Software Process Assessments

  SEI CMM Services

The quality of a software product is only as good as the process used to develop and maintain it. Whether a software organization is competing in the marketplace or trying to satisfy internal requirements, its software process is a critical success factor. Well thought out improvements to the process will significantly contribute to the organization's performance.

A Software Process Assessment is a catalyst for initiating meaningful process improvement and can help your organization break through the barriers that constrain quality and productivity. It will allow you to establish and focus a process improvement program that will result in:

  • Increased customer satisfaction
  • Lower development and maintenance costs
  • Reduced cycle time

What is a Software Process Assessment?

A software process assessment is an objective self- appraisal of an organization's software development capability. Our assessment services include both a comprehensive SEI Authorized CMM Assessment and a short-cut approach. Both are based on the Software Engineering Institute’s (SEI) widely-accepted Capability Maturity Model (CMM), which characterizes how a software organization matures, or improves, in its ability to develop software (see figure) and serves as a framework for becoming a world-class software organization.

Each process assessment is structured to ensure that aspects of software development that are unique to your organization or industry are addressed. For example, an assessment in a commercial software organization may examine the process for incorporating customer feedback in product design.

We conduct a process assessment as a collaborative effort, involving your software professionals in all assessment activities so that all participants gain a common understanding of the current software process and reach consensus on the critical process issues.

After conducting training in the SEI Capability Maturity Model and the assessment methodology, we will lead your assessment team through an intense five to eight-day period of fact-finding, analysis and review of issues, and presentation of findings to senior management and participants.

What can you expect from a Software Process Assessment?

At the completion of an SEI CMM Assessment you will have:

  • Objective findings that identify the strengths and weaknesses of the current software process.
  • A profile of the current process relative to the CMM.
  • An SEI maturity level rating.
  • A sound basis for developing a strategic improvement plan.
  • For organizations seeking ISO 9001 registration, a starting point for efficiently implementing the standard's requirements.

  About the SEI

Vision

Leading the world to a software-enriched society

Mission

The SEI advances software engineering and related disciplines to ensure the development and operation of systems with predictable and improved cost, schedule, and quality.

Strategy

To achieve its mission, the SEI strategy is to openly engage a broad-based community with a focus on improving the effects of software in the world. We create usable technologies, apply them to real problems, and amplify their impact by accelerating broad adoption.

Create
The SEI works with the research community to help create and identify new and improved practices. The SEI creates and identifies emerging or underused solutions to significant and pervasive software engineering problems and develops these solutions so that they can be applied by software developers and acquirers to improve their software engineering practices. The SEI enters into cooperative research and development agreements with industry and academia to test new and emerging technologies.

Apply
The SEI works with leading-edge software developers and acquirers to apply and validate the new and improved practices. Staff members help the DoD solve specific software engineering and acquisition problems by applying these practices. SEI direct support is funded through task orders for government work.

Amplify
The SEI works through the global community of software engineers to amplify the impact of the new and improved practices by encouraging and supporting their widespread adoption. The SEI works closely with DoD engineering organizations. In addition, the SEI offers continuing education courses based on matured, validated, and documented solutions, and licenses the packaging and delivery of new and improved technologies.
